Shortly after I was given a tour of the facility and learned about what The Children's Center Utah does for young children in our community who so desperately need help. You couldn't help but be moved and touched by her story. Listening about her family's strife and the positive outcome was overwhelming. The talk given by a grandmother whose entire family had benefitted from the care given to her and her family by The Children's Center Utah brought tears to my eyes. I fell in love with The Children's Center Utah when my wonderful daughter-in-law, Amelia Clawson, invited me to a breakfast. The Children’s Center is exactly that for so many families that don’t have anywhere else to turn. I don’t know what might have become of me had I not had the opportunity to sort out my feelings at a young age and I feel that every child experiencing issues should be able to get the help he or she needs. It was that therapist who was able to help me sort out the things that were happening and help my mom understand what I was experiencing. I was fortunate to have a mom that found a child therapist for me when she saw my moods and schoolwork slipping. My world had fallen apart and I couldn’t understand it. It seemed like an eternity to me, as a young child. My father left my mother and me when I was six years old and it was quite a while before I had contact with him again. I wanted to help more so I joined the gala committee where I learned more about what it takes to run the center and how many people work tirelessly behind the scenes to make this dream possible for families in need. My wife and I volunteered our time and went in to do art projects with the kids and I was able to tour the center and to better understand their mission and what TCC means to the families it helps. I started attending various events for the Children’s Center helping to raise both money and awareness. I was introduced to the Children’s Center by my wife and through the constant commitment of her family. These children need all of us in this community to make sure any child in need can receive this care, which is so necessary for our future as a community. There are so many families and children in need of the mental health services that the Children’s Center provides, and this pandemic crisis has increased that need. I see our support and connection to The Children’s Center as a legacy for the Barlow family that started with my grandparents, and as part of the third generation, I intend to continue this legacy with my children and their children to follow. Over the years, I have brought in my husband and my talented sister Abby, who has dedicated countless hours of her graphic design time to The Children’s Center as well. Several years back when I moved to Salt Lake, I joined the Jewelry Luncheon committee because I felt that it was so important to continue my family’s legacy of helping and giving back to The Children’s Center. That was over fifty years ago! My aunts and uncles, and now my cousins and siblings have continued to support and be involved with The Children’s Center because we know first-hand how life changing it is for not only a child, but for an entire family. It was always said that it was The Children’s Center that made all the difference in Rachel’s life, and my grandparents lives. I remember stories of my grandmother driving down to Salt Lake to bring my aunt to The Children’s Center and waiting all day while she was in school before driving back to Layton. I have grown up with The Children’s Center as part of our family history. In our first Spotlight on The Children’s Center’s advocates and supporters, we are thrilled to highlight the involvement of Amelia, Chad, and Judy. We are so grateful for their vital role in our fundraising efforts. Their passion and dedication to the mission of The Children’s Center and children’s mental health has been made even more clear in their willingness and ability to step up as we have had to Reimagine the 2020 SHINE Gala due to the global pandemic.
